How Shooting Encourages Women Empowerment by Karen

Is it just me, or Women Empowerment become really popular discussion topic? What a strong stance those two words alone take. I am 100% sure when women around the world hear those words “Women Empowerment” it makes them pull their shoulders back and hold their head up a little higher.

Truth be told each woman has their own definition of Women Empowerment. Before you continue reading this post I encourage you to ask yourself what those words mean to you. What makes a woman empowered? And what makes you feel empowered?

The definition of empower is to give power or authority to. I believe as humans (men or women) we all feel empowered when we are in control. When that control is taken from us or not allowed is what makes us to feel vulnerable. I feel empowered whether I am in control of the chore list in my household, a new project at work, and especially when choosing to protect myself and my family by carrying concealed.

Seeking to be trained to handle a firearm in a threatening scenario to protect yourself and those around you is the true definition of empowerment. Knowing that you have the power and authority to protect yourself and the ones you love is the ultimate level of empowerment.

So, do you remember when I asked you to think about what empowers you? I made a list of four things that make me feel empowered and how shooting has contributed to each.

Learning how to shoot a firearm encourages women empowerment. Women across our country are standing up and learning to shoot and refusing to be victims. This post discusses ways shooting can increase your confidence, safety, and independence while decreasing stress levels.

Safety
I think feeling safe is one of the most important feelings that contribute to empowerment, so it made the top of the list 🙂 My biggest fear is my daughter being a victim of a crime, not me, my daughter. As parents, we want to be able to protect our children from all the evils of the world. When I am training and target practicing I imagine an altercation between someone trying to come between my daughter and myself. Keeping her safe and teaching her things she can do to help keep her safe as she grows is a foundation for a strong empowered woman.

Stress Free
Yes, you read that correctly, shooting relieves stress and pent up anxiety. No, I am not referring to taping pictures of your boss’s face to your target (but I could see how you would think that:). Believe it or not, skilled and proper shooting requires you to be in touch with your body and fully aware of each inhaled and exhaled breath. Being steady and calming your body is all part of target practicing. Doing breathing exercises prior to target practicing can certainly decrease stress and increase your targeting results.

Independence
What says an “independent woman” more than a woman with her own power to provide her own safety (as well as the safety of others around her)? Independence is when something or someone can stand alone. As women of the 21st century fighting for equality and an end discrimination, it is time that we are able to stand alone and protect ourselves at the times we feel most vulnerable.

“I declare to you that women must not depend upon the protection of a man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand”

-Susan B. Anthony

Confidence
Confidence is the final result from feeling Safe, Independent and having less Stress. Being able to have control over walking away from an attacker gives you all the confidence in the world. I have never been attacked or in a scenario when my life has been threatened. I have been places where I feel unsafe. The first thing that goes through my mind is “Ok, if need be, how are you getting to your pistol”. It comforts me and gives me confidence to know I have a way to fight back if things go south. Knowing you have that power to take control of an unfortunate scenario grants you more confidence than you can dream of.

It is time for women to fight back and learn to protect themselves. The best way to teach the next generation is to teach by example. Show the next generation women can take control. Each of us has true Women Empowerment we just have to find how to ignite it.

Happy Carrying!
